German

Dates of course

Sunday 13th - Wednesday 16th July 2025

Course description

This varied course allows you to explore several exciting elements of degree-level German, such as language, literature, theatre, film, and linguistics, and gives you the opportunity to have a taster of two other European languages at beginners’ level.

Over the first two days, you will focus on German – a language you already study at A-level (or have proficiency in to an equivalent level). There will be sessions to hone your language skills as well as lectures and discussions introducing you to an exciting array of topics in literature, culture, or linguistics, from the medieval period to the present day.

During the latter part of the week, you will have a taste of two unfamiliar languages, from a pool of Italian, Portuguese and Russian, which can all be taken from scratch at Oxford. This is a unique opportunity to learn new grammar and phrases in a different language, and to explore new cultures through literature, film, or linguistics.

There will be no preparatory reading, but you might receive handouts at the beginning of the week with copies of the short texts that will be studied in each session. Across the week, you will have the opportunity to engage with world-leading academics in the field of Hispanic studies, and to test and flesh out your ideas with them through group discussions.

Our aim is to give you a taste of what it is really like to study Modern Languages at Oxford, and to give you a sense of the breadth of our courses – including several of the languages you can study here as a beginner.
