Course description
Classics: Ancient Greece is an introduction to the study of the language, culture, and thought of ancient Greece. You will get the chance to engage with some of the most fascinating ancient Greek stories and myths, from our earliest epic poems to the tragedies of ancient Athens, and to encounter intriguing characters both human and divine, such as Antigone, Odysseus and Persephone.
You will participate in lectures, seminars and tutorials on a wide variety of topics and texts. You will also be given an ancient text to read through in advance, on which you will be encouraged to write a short essay with help from tutors and student ambassadors. You will then have the opportunity to talk through your ideas with tutors and other students, just like in an Oxford tutorial.
The course is designed so that you do not need any prior experience studying the ancient world or ancient languages to participate. It will give you a real feel for what a Classics degree is like, and help you to develop a taste for the ancient Greek world and the skills involved in studying it.
Additional requirements for this UNIQ course
None: no prior knowledge of Classical languages is required.
