Course description

Ever wondered how the Earth formed, where life originated, or what mechanics shaped our planet? Earth Sciences attempts to answer these questions, as well as a multitude of others.

The Earth Sciences UNIQ course gives you the opportunity to delve deeper into the science behind our planet. During the week, you will attend lectures, practical sessions and tutorials on a broad range of topics, including plate tectonics, volcanology, seismology, palaeontology, mineralogy, planetary geology, geophysics and oceanography. You will also get to experience a local field course, to learn more about how Earth Scientists use evidence from the natural world to understand how our planet has evolved.

Since Earth Sciences is not a common option at A level or IB, this course aims to introduce you to the subject by providing a broad overview of the areas explored in the undergraduate course. It will also develop your analytical skills and experience handling geological specimens, giving context to basic concepts you may have covered in maths, physics or chemistry.

This course is fantastic for anyone that enjoys maths, physics, chemistry, geology or biology, and wants to experience what it is like to study an applied combination as opposed to a pure subject.

Additional requirements for this UNIQ course

We ask that you are currently studying towards an A level or equivalent in Maths, and one of either Physics or Chemistry. You should have an 8/9 in GCSE or equivalent in Maths, Physics OR Chemistry.
