UNIQ application system requirements
We understand that it can be frustrating if you encounter a problem with a website and whilst we have endeavoured to make the UNIQ website work across a variety of browsers and devices, we often can not account for individualised settings you may be using.
On an average day we receive hundreds of registrations and completed applications. At our peak (typically in the last week before the deadline) submitted applications can near 1000 in a day.
In over 10 years of running UNIQ we have never had a single moment of downtime during the application period.
If you have run into problems please continue reading this page, we have made a few suggestions below and we recommend you check each one carefully. In most cases, applicants who follow this guide are able to resolve their issues.
Browser Support
We support current versions of the following browsers on Windows, Mac OS, iOS and Android operating systems:
- Google Chrome
- Apple Safari
- Mozilla Firefox
- Microsoft Edge
The application form requires the use of JavaScript. Some firewalls and high-security environments disable JavaScript. Some schools may also prevent Javascript from running.
Session Cookies
The application form requires cookies to be enabled. If you are using a browser with third-party cookies disabled or cross-site tracking prevention enabled, you will not be able to login. To enable them you can:
Google Chrome
Go to Customize and control Google Chrome in the top right corner and click Settings.
Go to Privacy and security.
Click Cookies and other site data. Select the Allow all cookies radio button
Microsoft Edge
Go to Settings and more in the top right corner and click Settings.
Click Site permissions -> Cookies and site data.
Enable Allow sites to save and read cookie data. Disable Block third-party cookies.
Safari on Mac
Go to Safari -> Preferences and click Privacy.
Uncheck Block all cookies
Tracking
What is third party tracking?
In brief your login details aren't reaching our server correctly, making it seem like the application portal is broken for you.
Web browsers are generally trying to limit the amount of cross site tracking that occurs (think of it like website adverts following you around), however as there is no set standard yet what is occurring is that in some minor circumstances web users are running into issues and it's also impacting systems that aren't even running ads.
In our case we don't use tracking for ads, but for our application portal to talk to you and our core website.
Is this issue more common on certain devices?
Yes, if you have an apple device there is a significant chance you may run into this issue. Apple were early adopters in limiting tracking, but as there is no unified web standard Apple devices may run into problems more.
Why have I never run into this issue before?
The UNIQ application form is complex and has particular security and access requirements in order for us to be able to store data effectively. For most users this goes unnoticed, though we acknowledge that this can cause frustration for users that are having access troubles.
So how do we fix this?
First look in your privacy/security in your current browser and see if words like 'block cross-site tracking' are enabled, you should turn that off for the application portal. You can turn it on afterwards.
This image shows what should not be ticked.
Second try a different browser, installed fresh. So Firefox, Opera, Chrome - anyone your not currently using, but it must be a fresh install if you can. This will ensure we have a good starting point and again make sure 'block tracking' is off.
Third have a look and see if there are any anti-virus, ad blockers or general network restrictions running.
Further Solutions
If you have tried the above and still can not login we recommend:
- Install a new browser that you typically do not use (this ensures default settings).
- Double check that you do not have any anti-virus/firewall that may be controlling your browser settings.
- Use a different device. You can make an application from your phone or tablet.
- If you are using a school supplied laptop (such as a Chromebook) these often have heavily restricted internet access even outside of school.
Gmail
Gmail (Google mail) continues to be a source of frustration during the application period.
More often than we would like our verification emails are placed into the spam area despite our best efforts to ensure service wide domain policies are enforced.
Our verification emails typically should come through to our valid email account within several minutes.
We advise any applicants registering with a Gmail account to be mindful of this, and check the spam folder frequently.
